Ash Cakes Recipe

Ash cakes, also called fire cakes, are a very simple type of flat bread made of flour and water. It's simple and doesn't require much time or preparation. Needing only a few basic ingredients, this flat bread recipe can help you survive when you don't have much else to eat.

This recipe was used in the 1800s during the civil war by the soldiers, helping them to survive when there was little food.

You'll need the following ingredients:

  • flour
  • water
  • salt (optional - helps add taste)

  1. Put some flour into a bowl.
  2. Add a bit of salt to it, then mix the flour and salt together.
  3. Add a little water to it - only add a little at a time. You only need to add enough water to make a stiff dough. It should be dry and thick.
  4. Form the dough into some flattened circles. They should resemble pancakes.
  5. Cook it.

How to Cook It:

How you cook it will depend on what you have available to you.

If you have a fire, then you can cook it in ashes or by the fire. If you have access to a stove, you can cook it in a skillet.

Watch the video below for the full set of instructions and how to make it and cook it in a fire in the same way the soldiers did it in the 1800s.
