Since 1980, the WRC Domestic Violence Shelter has provided safe, temporary housing for individuals and their children who have been victimized by domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking. Residents receive individual and group support, Domestic Violence education, advocacy, court advocacy, information and referral on housing, employment and legal assistance. They also benefit from the understanding and support of the staff and other residents. Additional services are provided as the needs of the residents change.
The children’s program at the shelter focuses its attention back on the children to provide them with support and hope. This is accomplished by strengthening the parent/guardian’s ability to ensure the well-being and developmental growth of their children. Through individual and group contact with families, the advocates seek to bolster self-concepts, develop coping skills and refer to necessary services in the community. Children are taught safe and healthy ways of communicating feelings and are accepted as they do so.
The shelter program works to meet the comprehensive needs of victims who have been impacted by abuse. The shelter strives to provide a warm, home-like atmosphere, where individuals and families can be comfortable and can begin to feel safe. Safety and confidentiality is always the top priority of the program and protocols are designed to enhance safety and confidentiality throughout an individual’s stay.
