Practical guide
Replace ID and important documents
A practical starting point when missing identification is blocking housing, work, benefits, or services.
Need current local options?
Figure out which document is blocking you
- Common needs include a state ID, driver license, Social Security card, birth certificate, or proof of residence.
- Ask the agency or employer exactly which alternatives they accept before paying to replace multiple documents.
Ask support programs about fees and mailing
- Some homeless-service providers can help with replacement fees, transportation, forms, notarization, or obtaining supporting records.
- If you do not have a stable mailing address, ask whether a shelter, day center, or service organization can receive mail for you.
