Practical guide
Where to store your belongings
Ideas for protecting documents, clothing, and other possessions when you do not have a secure place to keep them.
Need current local options?
Ask service providers first
- Some shelters and day centers have lockers, bins, or limited storage for guests or clients. Ask about hours, size limits, prohibited items, and how long belongings can remain there.
- Churches, community centers, outreach programs, or other local organizations may know of storage programs even when they do not provide storage themselves.
- If you have a trusted friend or family member, storing a small amount of important property with them may be safer than carrying everything.
If paid storage is the only option
- Ask self-storage facilities whether they have small units, introductory discounts, or assistance programs, but make sure you understand the recurring cost before signing anything.
- Do not place identification, medication, or anything you may need urgently somewhere you cannot access outside business hours.
Protect the most important items
- Keep identification, benefit cards, medications, phone, charger, and essential paperwork together and protected from rain.
- Photograph important documents and store copies in a secure online account when possible.
- Avoid leaving valuables unattended in shopping carts, open camps, vehicles, or other unsecured locations.
