Practical guide
When shelters are full
What to ask about next when the first shelter you contact has no available bed.
Need current local options?
Ask the shelter before hanging up
- Ask whether they expect beds to open later that day or the next morning.
- Ask whether they keep a waitlist or know which nearby shelter currently has space.
- Ask about overflow beds, warming or cooling centers, motel assistance, transportation, or outreach programs if those services exist locally.
Try a broader search
- Search nearby cities as well as your current city.
- Look at day centers and support-service providers. They may know about current openings, transportation, meals, showers, charging, mail service, or case management.
- Call 211 and explain that the shelters you contacted are full so the referral specialist can look for alternatives.
Protect important things
- Keep identification, medications, phone, charger, and essential documents together if possible.
- Avoid isolated locations when you can, especially if you are alone or feel unsafe.
- If weather conditions are dangerous, ask specifically about emergency weather shelters or public warming/cooling locations.
If you still cannot find what you need
Call 211 for Oklahoma community-resource referrals. For mental-health or substance-use crisis support, call or text 988. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing an emergency, call 911.
