Look beyond job listings

  • Employment programs may help with resumes, applications, interviews, training, work clothing, transportation, identification, or computer access.
  • Tell the program what is actually preventing you from working so they can focus on the barrier instead of only giving you job leads.
  • Libraries and day centers may provide computer access, Wi-Fi, printing, charging, and a place to complete applications.

Use skills you already have

  • Think about work, hobbies, school projects, or practical skills you already know. Small services such as yard work, cleaning, repairs, art, music, pet care, or other lawful freelance work may create short-term income.
  • One idea from the original OKHomeless guide was making balloon animals for donations after remembering a skill learned in childhood. The larger point is to look for something useful you can actually do rather than assuming you have nothing to offer.
  • If you have reliable internet access, legitimate freelance or remote work may be possible, but watch for fake-check, advance-fee, gift-card, and account-access scams.

Other short-term possibilities

  • Ask about day labor, temporary staffing, workforce programs, and seasonal work.
  • Street performance or selling handmade items may be possible in some places, but check local rules before setting up.
  • Some communities or recyclers pay for certain recyclable materials. Verify what is accepted and whether identification is required before collecting or hauling material.
  • Panhandling rules vary by location. If you are considering it, check local rules and also look for options that may provide more predictable income.
